Synopsis: Bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart’s Oliver! takes audiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Join young, orphaned Oliver Twist as he navigates the London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly - for love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, he is welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, he is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman, to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sykes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results. With spirited, timeless songs like “As Long as He Needs Me,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Where is Love,” Oliver! is a musical classic.

Angele has developed a jealousy that borders on paranoia and she narrowly watches the activities of her second husband. Ribadier however possesses the gift of hypnotism — the eponymous system — and he profits from it by putting his wife to sleep at the time of his escapades. He wakes her on his return thanks to a trick he alone knows. Until the day that is, that he tactlessly reveals the trick to Aristide Thommereux, a friend of Robineau, who has returned from several years away in the East, hoping to renew his secret love for Angèle.

Synopsis: It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic holiday movie with a clever twist thrown in: the story is staged as a live radio broadcast. Actors portray numerous characters, and sound effects are done through Foley artists. It’s a Wonderful Life is about the life of George Bailey, a generous and well-meaning man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. It will take help from a lovable angel to show George what life would be like if he wasn’t born for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays.

This is not a traditional play – it is set in a New York radio studio on Chirstmas Eve, 1946.

Synopsis: When two young parents bring home their newborn child, it becomes quickly apparent that they have no knowledge of how to care for the baby. Determined not to look at the gender of the child, so as not to be impolite, they assume incorrectly that the baby is a girl. What follows is an erratic look at the family unit as the child is raised by incompetent (but loving) parents and a nanny who turns out to be the anti-Mary Poppins. Not to mention several years of therapy for the baby...all while trying to write an essay on Gulliver's Travels...and complete University before he turns thirty.
For anyone who has, was, or is a parent, this contemporary classic from Christopher Durang will have you both laughing and gasping as we lampoon modern parenting.

Other Information: Accents: possibly American. All characters, except Daisy, will be portrayed as caricatures, so I am looking for exaggerated portrayals.
The play will essentially be staged as a cartoon, with Daisy as a live action character in a world that finds him completely out of his depth.

Auditions are open call. Please plan on spending at least an hour at the audition. The audition will consist of reading allocated scenes from the play with the other actors and some improvisational work. Please have read the play prior to the auditions. There are copies available in the VDL library, or one can be provided by contacting the director.

Synopsis: This is a play with music. There is a significant singing requirement.
The love story is set in the winter of '38/'39 in England. Alec meets Laura at the railway station cafe and they over a few meetings fall in love. They are married and their love affair is unrequited despite their attempts.
Myrtle, Albert, Stanley and Beryl provide distractions and interludes and accompany the action with the authors songs and poem set to original music. The addition of the music and song provides a playfully comedic backdrop to the love story that plays through the show.

All characters, with the exception of Laura will be asked to sing.

Rehearsals will be staged with songs/music first, commencing late August/early September.
