Men work at the docks and women stay at home cooking, cleaning and caring for children. Two illegal migrants from Sicily arrive to stay in Eddie's home and one of them Rodolpho, falls in love with Eddie's niece, who lives with Eddie and his wife under a set of Sicilian family rules and morals dictated by Eddie. The consequent stand-off between Rodolpho and Eddie has tragic consequences.

In her absence an upstairs neighbour, a boxing promoter's moll, seeks refuge in their flat, accompanied by her huge intellectually challenged minder. Three normally separate English worlds are now in collision, and ahead lie confusions, desperate interventions, frenzied outbursts and a little heartfelt grief. Ayckbourn successfully mixes the accidental and improbable, with uproariously comic results.
