VDL One Act Play Festivals 2008

One Act Play Festivals are designed to encourage people to participate in a weekend of theatre.

Participants are generally invited to take part in a range of theatrical as well as social activities over a weekend period. Performances generally take place Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday, if required. Adjudication takes place over the weekend and Awards presentation is held at the end of the weekend. At most Festivals each participant receives a copy of the adjudicators comments on their performance.

You will find many participants compete in a number of the festivals and enjoy the cut and thrust of performing in one-act plays. The Victorian Drama League has a large collection of one-act plays in its library. Members can hire play sets of scripts at very reasonable rates. For further details concerning membership see our membership page or call the Library on 03-9663-4222.

The Type of Rules (we would, however, suggest you contact each organiser to get the exact rules)

    • Time varies between 15 to 45-50 minutes per production.
    • Number of characters between 3 and 10.
    • "Bump in" time 10 minutes, "bump out" time 5 minutes.
    • Royalties to be paid by the participant(s).
    • A copy of the script should be sent with the entry.
    • Information about cast, play & group should be sent to the organisers with entry for inclusion in the program.
    • Costs vary from nothing up to $90 per play.

Festival organisers have occassionally overlapped dates. It is our hope that organisers will avoid placing festivals on the same weekend as another.
